The new normal has altered how we celebrate holidays and special days – Mother’s Day included. In Malaysia, we often bring our moms out for a special dinner or organise a family outing to make it a day to be remembered. These days, to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe, we have settled into home-based celebrations. Whichever ways we choose to honour Mother’s Day, it should always be a day when we express our respect and love towards the queens of our hearts. Here’s how we can make this day a memorable one in the comfort of our own homes.
1. The Gift of Breakfast
As one of the most classic ways to start off Mother’s Day, making your mom her favourite breakfast is guaranteed to make her smile as soon as she wakes up! Even if she’s not much of a breakfast person, serving her a cup of coffee in a pretty mug with decorations at the side while she’s still in bed would certainly be an excellent way to begin this special day. But why stop at breakfast in bed? It’s enjoyable to have a Mother’s Day breakfast or brunch with all your loved ones too!
2. Family Bake-Off
Breakfast aside, you can also have the rest of your family join you in a family bake-off, with your mother as the judge. The winner gets more love – and yummy cookies from her. Baking is sure to bring on loads of fun and giggles.
3. Picnic in the Backyard
If you have lots of food, and a cosy backyard, bring the Mother’s Day party outside, with a cute blanket set up and picnic-ready munchies.
4. Handmade Presents
Don’t forget to get her a present. But it doesn’t have to be expensive. In fact, handmade ones can be superbly memorable gifts for mom. Regardless of how it turns out, the effort that goes into something made from your hands (and heart) will really show her your appreciation!
5. Heartfelt Hand-Written Messages
If you are not the arts-and-crafty type, you can send her beautiful hand-written letters to tell her how much she means to you.
6. Spa Day at Home
Nothing pampers women like relaxing spa treatments – even at home. Have a spa day with your mother: put on mud masks, soak in bath bombs, and have a foot bath. It wouldn’t hurt to give her a massage while you’re at it. You can also get someone over to give you and your mom a manicure or pedicure.
7. Wine Tasting
Is your mom a wine lover? Create a bespoke wine tasting session with different varieties of red, white, and rose wine, matched with curated charcuterie boards.
8. At-Home Photoshoot
Help your mom get dolled up and round everyone up for a photo session. You can also set the stage with props to make it more exciting. Try funny poses to create a collage of fun moments with your mom.
9. Movie Night
If you are looking for a simple activity, nothing beats warm and cosy blankets, tasty snacks and a good movie. Re-watch your mother’s favourite movie or choose something heartwarming and romantic.
10. Disco Night
Remember, your mother was young, wild and free once too! It’s time to remind her that she’s never too old to have fun. Decorate your house in disco lights, get dressed like it’s the 70s or 80s again, and have a dance party.
11. Virtual Gaming Sessions
If you live far away from mom, Mother’s Day is the best opportunity to bring your family together via a video call to honour your special lady. Chats aside, try out various online games such as Among Us or word games.
12. Poetry Session
How about dedicating warm and meaningful poetry to your mother? Have your family come up with short poems written for your mother and perform them in the living room together. Add in some background music, or have someone strum the guitar for a complete performance.
13. Painting Exchange
Drawing or painting with watercolours can also be a calming activity for mothers and their loved ones. Here’s an idea to make it more interesting – make painting a team effort! Each of you can spend 15 minutes painting on a single canvas, just picking up where the other has previously left off. The end product will be pretty surprising!
14. Card Games
Card games are a fun way to bond with one another. Pick something that’s fast and easy – for instance, UNO or even poker if your mom enjoys it.
15. Quiet Time
Mother’s Day doesn’t need to be jam-packed with activities. Most moms would appreciate just spending quiet time alone or with their kids. This also lets her chill out and enjoy some well-earned me-time.
Spending time with your mother and showing her your love is what’s truly important regardless of where or how you are celebrating this special day. Showing up for her is all it takes to let her know that she is loved and adored. She deserves all the attention and care in the world, so be with them and celebrate Mother’s Day in your own unique way and with all your heart.
