Have you ever been asked to speak in front of a crowd of people, whether it is to make an announcement or to give a speech? Here’s the thing – you may be dressed really well, or may be using the latest make-up, or be sporting the trendiest hair-do, but if you happen to lack the confidence needed for speaking in public, even the thought of doing it would sound like a terrifying idea, more so if you do not happen to be proficient enough in English.
The fact is, students do not need to be professional public speakers to actually hold a microphone and start speaking on a podium to an audience. They do, however, need to be confident in themselves, and have a certain degree of self-trust. While the whole thing may sound daunting, public speaking happens to be among the many skills taught at our country’s top English language school, IGS English. Through the IGS English Kid’s Public Speaking programme, teachers with TEFL/TESL qualification or the equivalent go above and beyond in guiding students into using proper body language, eye contact and voice projection. IGS English was founded a decade ago by a mother of two, Madam Florence Tee, who had been concerned about the standard of English being taught in schools back then. She decided to open the door of her own home to a handful of kids who were in need of some essential coaching in various aspects of the English language. Fast forward to the present day, IGS English takes up a prime spot in one of Petaling Jaya’s well-loved shopping malls, Atria Shopping Gallery. With well over 2,000 students currently enrolled and a list of programmes including writing, reading, story-tellling, as well as public speaking, the acclaimed centre has grown to become one of the country’s top providers of English language courses for kids.
