Consistency is key when it comes to raising tiny humans. One indication that kids crave repetition is in picking up the same storybook to be read to before bedtime. Even if you and your child know all the words by heart, they are still learning from the pictures and interactions you have with them. To them, the familiarity is enjoyable.
More importantly, repetition helps your child learn complex information by increasing the number of times the information is encoded. This allows your child to focus on different elements of the experience and by interacting with you, they are able to have a better understanding of the world around them.
Timing is everything. A good daily routine helps cultivate a sense of discipline in young children where simple tasks like making the bed first thing in the morning turns into a positive habit over time. Brushing our teeth twice a day is a classic example of a positive habit that follows us into adulthood. The discipline has probably saved you some time and money at the dentist’s office.
Jigna also shares that structure helps children develop focus and time management skills. “We see it every day in Toddler Town. If children know what they will be doing every day, they will be less likely to get derailed by other activities. The spillover effect into adulthood is a very positive one.”
The power struggle you can all win. With an established routine, your child understands that he or she is expected to pick up their toys after they are done playing with it. Over time, this instills a sense of responsibility for what they own, learn to respect their belongings and take pride in a clean home.
“Discipline and structure don’t have to be boring. Going to the park every Saturday or having a movie night once a week can help strengthen the bond between parents and children. The important thing to remember is that a good routine and discipline will better prepare your child to be independent and self-sufficient adults.”

Today, as more adults experience a disruption in sleep patterns from excessive screen time, it has become clear why a proper bedtime routine should be established, not just for our children but for ourselves. So the next time that familiar book finds its way into the bedroom, remember this is an important step in your child’s learning journey that you could stand to benefit from as well.
